Partners of the European project FREE4LIB met in Brussels at the beginning of June for the project’s final meeting, where they shared key results achieved after four years of collaborative work.<\/p>\n

The meeting was an opportunity to showcase the project’s progress in a visual and tangible way, highlighting an electric bicycle powered by a fully functional battery manufactured almost entirely from recycled materials sourced from end-of-life lithium-ion batteries.<\/p>\n

This demonstrator clearly illustrates the potential of the technologies developed within FREE4LIB to move forward to a circular economy for batteries. Recovered materials through different recycling processes can be reintegrated into new products, thereby reducing the need for virgin raw materials and contributing to a more sustainable and resilient supply chain in Europe.<\/p>\n

Lurederra successfully designed a workflow to transform several types of recycled materials into high-quality metal precursors suitable for being use in flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) equipment. Throughout the project, Lurederra conducted numerous FSP productions at different scales, progressively optimizing active materials for NMC-based cathodes to achieve the desired physicochemical properties, such as specific crystalline phases and metal ratios. In parallel, the project has opened up new avenues for research and provided a roadmap for further work on recycling processes capable of industrial-scale implementation.<\/p>\n
